Prism Glass

blog-cover-image---prism-glass

There is artistry and inspiration found in the unique style of glass honed in the 20th century that brought light in, around, and under. While it was born through function, today we enjoy it for the fashion. Originally crafted to solve the struggle of limited light in the underbelly of ocean crossing ships, prism glass absorbs the outdoor light, pulls it in, and disperses it through the interior of the designated space. The fact that the end result was stunning even then is a total bonus.

When this type of glass is used today, it is a representation of an era that valued quality, ingenuity, and sustainability. Today we use this glass on many of our Landmarks doors produced for the FDNY with the same values in mind: quality, ingenuity, and sustainability. Let's take a closer look at prism glass.

What is Prism Glass

Prism glass is an architectural glass which bends and redirects daylight through refraction and reflection. If you aren't thinking of Pink Floyd's album, the Dark Side of the Moon, we will have to talk later; however, many of us are familiar with the single beam of white light hitting the triangular prism and splitting the beam into its individual parts thus creating the rainbow. This iconic representation may be the most widely known (at least by music and cultural standards) depiction of how light refraction works.

This innovation in glass became common around the turn of the 20th century. The first patent for prism glass described it in this way: "Whereby the reflection of the light into the room is considerably increased without increasing the size of the window." It elaborated to state the innovation would "double the quantity of reflection or illumination."

At this time (1882), Edison had formed the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of New York which was, (albeit slowly) bringing electricity to much of Manhattan. During the transition, many people still relied on gas light and candles to illuminate their homes. It was some 50 years before half of New Yorkers were able to incorporate electric power into their homes. It's no wonder this innovation was applied to rooms and spaces beneath sidewalks and entryways as New Yorkers awaited their Edison electricity!

The same was true of structures of the time such as firehouses. In many cases, prism glass was used to shine light from the front of the building into the living space and the basement of the structure. Many firehouses were known to have removable floors inside the door that would illuminate the basement.

FDNY

A walk through the streets of New York's five boroughs will undoubtedly bring you past one of the 197 Engine Houses associated with the FDNY. Most of the doors you will see have been manufactured by Fimbel either then or now. Together with our team at Thompson Overhead Door in Brooklyn, the FDNY, and the Landmark Society of New York, we bring the facades of historic firehouses back to life with stunning commercial garage doors that look like art. Utilizing block prism glass is one way that we incorporate art, function, and history into our vinyl and composite constructed doors. Our low maintenance products have the look of painted wood and are built to last.

Choosing a Garage Door Style

blog-cover-image---door-styles

Updating or selecting a quality new garage door will offer enhanced beauty and safety, and the right upscale garage door can give you a 98% RETURN ON INVESTMENT at resale! Deciding on the right door starts with selecting a quality product that will last and offer both beauty and durability regardless of geography. Our low-maintenance, energy smart doors will add to the satisfaction and the sustainability of your home. As a 4th generation family run business that has been building garage doors since 1924, we have quite a bit to offer today's curious consumer!

There are three main categories of residential garage doors: Carriage Style, Traditional, and Modern. Fimbel ADS has been primarily a carriage style door manufacturer since 2003. At that time, we sought to emulate the look of true carriage doors with the classic big windows, swing door appearance, and the sturdy overlay look, but we wanted to do this with composite materials that would simultaneously allow longevity and ingenuity thus resulting in the look of smooth, finished wood. That said, we have not lost our 95 year old roots or our vision for the future, so we proudly offer a vast array of designs to bring you more in a garage door.

Carriage Style Doors

Carriage style doors are as timeless as Bette Davis and Greta Garbo's smiles and still as beloved today.

In 1923 C.J. Johnson patented the overhead door that quickly replaced swing style doors on garages across the United States welcoming the Model-T Fords to roll right in. The production of doors that swing up and over the head versus out into the driveway changed life at the time, but we held on to the gorgeous appearance.

One of the predominant features found on a classic American carriage style door are the big windows. This highlight of the product is one to truly make it stand out. Where many others use window inserts or have to joint the pieces together, our tops are made of solid, one-piece vinyl material. This means the entire face of the top, or grille as it is referred to, is one quality sheet of carved material with no joints or inserts to truly replicate the look of wood.

You will often find decorative hardware adorning the face of many carriage style doors. Original swing doors would have straps and hinges to secure them to the frame and provide strength to the structure. They would also have handles at the center to allow the doors to be pulled open. Adding this element to today's overhead doors gives authenticity to the door and complements many homes; however, this feature is not required to allow the beauty of a carriage style door to add impact to any home.

Traditional Garage Doors

Traditional raised panel doors are iconic in the garage door industry. When the roll-former was introduced to manufacturers across the country, the opportunity to mass produce with repeatability became a reality. You know these doors. You have seen them since you were a kid, and they served the market well for a long time.

The long and short panels offer symmetry and accommodate nearly any opening. The style presents the appearance of the frame and panel construction used by millworkers for cabinets and furniture. The result is the illusion that a floating panel sits inside the frame except we run the look on one full sheet of composite material. Similarly the recessed panel door is equally as timeless showcasing the pronounced frame with a slightly more shallow, or depressed, panel.

Both styles offer a standard look meant to comply with nearly any design style, but if your home or project has personality beyond Traditional, we have many options for you!

Modern Garage Doors

Modern garage doors are sleek and alluring with their clean geometric lines, simple proportions, and stylish glass, and they truly add to your home's motif when paired appropriately. This style is descended from international architectural styles, which were developed in the 1920s and 30's and spanned through the latter part of the 1900's with the architectural brilliance of designers like Frank Lloyd Wright.

Due to our process for manufacturing, we are able to add windows and designs to nearly any placement and in any shape you wish to compliment your home. Adding glass in your preference, whether frosted or otherwise obscured can control the level of light and privacy in your garage. Selecting the right paint or stain color will complete the look for your updated exterior!

Bring it to Life!

Now comes the fun part! When picking your design options, look at what goes with the exterior of your home. Consider the style of your home and color as well as features like entry doors, windows, arches, angles, and profiles. With our doors you can choose to leave them natural white, have them painted or faux stained to complement any project desires!

When we build, we build for beauty and durability that will last because we care about your satisfaction as well as our environment. From our processes to our products, we reduce, reuse, and recycle everything we can. We run on solar, and we love to help reduce your overall maintenance efforts and costs.

Whatever questions you have to find the right garage door, we are certain we have the solutions. We are proud of our Partners who will provide fair and exceptional service. We can help, and we have this video for a casual tour of our showroom!

In the world of Fimbel, we do not believe in many limitations. We believe that if you can dream it, we can make it. What makes us different is that we build doors that last, reduce impact on the earth, and require very low maintenance and increased durability allowing you peace of mind. We have the best warranty on the market because we stand behind the product we make. We look forward to seeing your creativity and being able to give you a More in a Garage.

Fimbel’s Case Studies

Feature-Image---case-studies---Blog-2

For 95 years, our family owned, woman-run company has maintained its commitment to quality. We are proud our doors blend creativity and technology to bring lasting beauty and support our mission for sustainability. Behind the smooth, high end look of wood, we use composite materials from partners who share our values to provide an affordable, customizable garage door to increase the value and satisfaction in your home. Fimbel doors are durable to stand the test of time and low-maintenance to add time to your lifestyle. Residential or Commercial. Carriage Style to Modern Design. Historic Restoration or New Build. We offer you more in a garage door.

Essentially, we make two products – two platforms upon which you can design away!

Our first construction platform offers carriage and traditional styles using a vinyl clad steel pan and applying vinyl overlays to create the look of a classic wood door. This door is exceptional for two main reasons - the first is the platform (pan) made of a smooth, steel base created for the elements that we coat (clad) in a thin layer of crisp, white vinyl. This innovation allows for the American Legends series to live nearly anywhere, even near the ocean, without rusting and rotting away in the elements. The second is the addition of our smooth, solid overlays made of sustainable material. Separating ourselves from the competition's fake wood grain completes the constructed look to appear as real, painted, traditional wood. Both features ensure the longevity our ethics demand of us, the look we all crave, and a price point sure to please.

Our second construction platform, the Estate Collection, truly welcomes the designer in all of us to emerge with the blend between tradition and innovation. Using a hand placed wood frame and nesting in our insulation, we laminate a vinyl back cover and a solid vinyl exterior that encases the face. This slab now becomes a blank slate to bring you more for your door.

We are proud to feature six of our projects that showcase some of our many capabilities!

CASE STUDY 1:

2019 This Old House Idea House; New Canaan, CT

Product: Custom Roaring Twenties

The 2019 Idea House featured the restoration of the facade of an 1880s Greek Revival. Karp Associates and CAH Architects married old with new to accommodate the legacy of the home and allow for modern aspirations. To complement the restored window sashes on the front of the home, the Charleston design was chosen for the style, size and complementing interior grille.

For more information on this project, please enjoy our recent blog post, or check out the official link from This Old House!

CASE STUDY 2:

Historic Engine 55, Fire Dept. of New York, NY

Product: Custom Presidential

Engine 55's beautiful three-story firehouse, built in 1889, was designed by R.H. Robertson. The original doors were wooden swing-out carriage doors – intricately made and adorned with wrought iron. To match the original spec, as required by landmarks, a combination of innovative technology, advanced materials, craftsmanship and artistry was required with a custom finish.

For more information and details on this project, enjoy this blog that identifies our relationship with the FDNY and the customizations we offer!

CASE STUDY 3:

Wavehaus; Northport, NY by Charles D'Allesio

Product: Custom Euro-Dor

The architect, who built the structure with a nautical theme, curving fiberglass and masonry sides, along with a wall of glass facing the Long Island Sound, says he likes to think of it as a giant suspended wave. He wanted the durability of nature with the comforts of home, and its seashell-like strength was demonstrated during superstorm Sandy.

We found this article really helpful when looking into the details of this home! Enjoy this article from Newsday!

CASE STUDY 4:

Waterside Home; Westerly, RI

Product: Custom American Legends

Living on the shores of Rhode Island, this homeowner saw a neighbor's home using lattice to create a wall to enclose the parking area for their vehicles and boats. He loved the idea but wanted something more durable – more beautiful – more transitional. Tapping our capabilities; we used the American Legends Platform and added ¾" Versatex in a lattice design.

We love this project because our dealer understood the needs of our customer and the opportunity found in all of our products. Using innovation and technology, we brought quality and sustainability to an active lifestyle along the water.

What design limitation is standing in your way of satisfaction? We encourage you to think beyond the door and see how it serves to bring more joy to your life!

CASE STUDY 5:

Modern Design, Long Island, NY

Product: Custom Euro-Dor

For this project, the homeowner wanted to replace the standard garage door with a modern complement to the home's architectural design. Using our Liberty Collection platform, we reorganized the window layout and had a custom stain applied. The result is the look of individual planks of wood compiled into a four-section overhead door.

While the design of the door is rather simple, the impact is gigantic. The consistency of the faux stain and the quality of the windows adds satisfaction that will last. What design element or architectural feature can we help you enhance?

CASE STUDY 6:

Cleo's Coastal Retreat, Jamestown, RI

Product: Half Door - American Legends Garage Doors (3) - Roaring Twenties

Tucked into the coastal town of Jamestown, Rhode Island, this adorable retreat features sprawling views of the water's edge while offering poolside service through the half-door on the pool house. The home's garage hides toys, allowing the owners to enjoy the vast scenery.

This project combines the customary appeal of our Roaring Twenties traditional carriage style doors as well as the innovation in the half door. Allowing both products to live comfortably with a full warranty so close to the ocean means the homeowner's will enjoy our doors for years to come!

Two Platforms with Many Directions:

Essentially, we make two products – two platforms upon which you can design away!

1. The American Legends Series

2. The Estate Collection: Euro, Presidential, and Roaring Twenties

Using both ⅜" and ¾" material, Versatex for unfinished doors and Tricoya for finished doors, we have options to add select profiles and nearly limitless designs to satisfy inspiration. These capabilities allow us to build the door in 1" height and width increments. You will see these designs in our Euro-Dor and Presidential Series offering carriage, traditional, and modern styles.

To achieve a more classic carriage look, we offer the Roaring Twenties. This series starts with the same platform yet adds solid, study overlays pocketed (nested) into the face. The pronounced look of this classic style can be modified in myriad ways to satisfy decorative features and historical applications. Each of these series offers incredible longevity and beauty we can all feel good about.

Standard and Custom Tops Available

We don't hold back with the designs on our doors, so we can't hold back on the designs of our glass sections. Much like the sections described above, we use a solid sheet to create the face and contain the design. The one-piece grille with no joints or inserts and various profile options adds instant design appeal. In most of our doors we offer both large or small window options with custom designs, including window shape and placement, and custom arches available for your design needs.

Finishing Options

As you dream of your door coming to life, don't forget to consider your options. We are very proud of our factory finish and offer it in both standard and custom paint options but also in an array of hand-applied faux stain. The result is the finest finish in the industry and brings a furniture-like finish to exterior architecture. With a strong warranty and compassion for the earth, our paint is an excellent addition to your garage door.

Using heat-reflective high-performance paint, all Factory Finished products will be delivered with a clean finish to last! While most of our products do not require finishing and may remain natural white, adding color to your project can add the wow-factor that you are after! Our vast and ever-expanding color palette includes blacks, charcoals and dark greens as well as faux stains to truly replicate the look of wood without the maintenance. With solutions for replacement of damaged sections to navigating tough exposures to Do-It-Yourself options, our finish will brighten up your home and increase durability. Tips for Garage Organization

blog-cover-image---organization

2020 has certainly taught us the value of our space - for better or for worse. As quarantine set in and the walls became a little closer and the delivery boxes piled higher, the valuable real estate in the garage became precious. For many the garage tends to act as a collection and storage unit which is great, but the garage is indeed intended for parking vehicles. Don't endure another winter parking the car outside the comfort of the garage.

Below are some simple tips to support your project of reclaiming the garage in a way that will last with limited maintenance year after year. Just like our doors, we want you to enjoy life in a low-maintenance, quality way.

Sort and redistribute:
At first glance, it likely looks daunting to have piles and collections of your life and lifestyle accumulating in the garage, but as with all things large, take it one step at a time. Consider this an opportunity to move the overwhelm of your garage out once and for all. Take a deep breath and begin to address all items in the garage with a new set of eyes. For this phase, you will organize by value by assigning the item in one of three categories:

Discard:

Remove the riff-raff. Yes - you have riff-raff. Identify trash and recycling and remove it immediately. The added space will be rewarding and allow for additional organizing. Let it go!

Donate (or sell):

We know you love the bikes your three kids first learned to pedal a bike on, but do you need to keep them? It is likely your garage is full of items you love that you will never again use. Find a local charity to donate or try your hand at selling independently. The key here is to follow through. Don't decide to sell your items and never take the time to list them. The object is to create more space for you today. If you aren't using it and others will, let it go.

Displace:

Is the garage storing family keepsakes that may be best stored in the attic? Do you have items you borrowed from a neighbor and neglected to return? Where all of this remains is up to you. Just because you CAN store it in the garage doesn't mean it belongs there. Let it go!

Are you singing Frozen now, too? Keep singing and know that the cold is upon us, and this effort will be worth it!

Cluster
Now that the floor of the garage can be seen, it is time to sort and organize by category and purpose. Identify items that are similar and different, and then physically pick them up and put them with items that fulfil the same purpose or require a particular storage need.

For example, it would be helpful to cluster chemicals away from paints and lawn/garden tools away from children's sports equipment. Consider each cluster with a lense of safety first and then purpose second. Let your lifestyle and demands drive the organizing.

This phase is key to sustainability. Get this right, and you get the next step right which leads to a plan that will work year after year.

Visualize
Create your vision - the one where you are moving and functioning in your garage with ease. Consider which categories need to be most accessible to the door of the home and which would have less need for easy access. There are many things here to consider. Some people love to keep garbage bin right by the door for easy access while others want to keep any aromas farther away. Does your garage vision allow the car(s) to enter easily and move in and out of the doors? Be sure there is space for safety and comfort. For those with kids, considering how they will access each item is critical. Putting a toy too high for them to reach leaves the item unused or causes more work for you, so strategy ahead of time allows for peace of mind later!
The old adage in the building industry is 'measure twice and cut once". This is very important at this phase. Take clear and comprehensive measurements of the space and the demand of your clustered items. Measure to be sure your concepts will fit and take good notes to be sure you get the right materials.

Implement
Using the measurements and visualized plan, identify the needed components for the storage systems. Our Pinterest page has a lot of ideas for garage organization on this link. From freestanding storage shelves that will evolve with you over time to mounted storage shelves that allow you so many opportunities and configurations to storage bins that seem to make any mess manageable, your solutions are out there.

We know it is fun to go shopping, and we hope you enjoy it, but be sure to choose items that you can maintain the vision. It is our experience that building smart systems around business and life allow for sustainability and satisfaction. For example, if you collect muddy shoes in a bin, you might select a container without a lid to allow your family to simply toss them in without effort. If there is a lid, the muddy shoes may not make it in.

Once you have identified the needed storage supplies. It may be necessary to schedule time to make this happen because being busy seems to be a way of life. Now that the hard work has been done, the fun can happen. Set up your shelves and systems and bring your organized garage to life.

Protect
Once you have brought this project to its close, be sure that you have the right door(s) to protect your possessions. Weather tight seals will keep out the elements and unwanted little visitors (critters). Insulated sections will offer not only support for climate controlled garages but also reduce noise going in and coming out. R-value helps to manage the balance of the garage's environment.

Why Fimbel
All of this points to a Fimbel door. Fimbel is about sustainability. From the materials we choose to the culture we create to the operations that guide our practices, we want to bring you quality that endures for the next generation. We run on solar and plant a tree for every door sold, so we know are dedicated to making life work for all.
