The Benefits of a New Garage Door

Feature-Image---benefits-of-a-new-door-Blog

Garage doors have come a long way. For decades they simply stood sentinel to welcome vehicles and hide our belongings. Today, 71% of families use the garage as the primary entrance to the home, and the role of the door has changed. Now we see design innovation and manufacturing excellence furnishing garages with absolute beauty and supreme function. At Fimbel ADS we are committed to carrying forth the quality and craftsmanship our great-grandfather built our family business upon while blending in the marvels of today's manufacturing capabilities. You will not find a more beautiful or durable door in the market, and we are sure it will only bring satisfaction to your life.

As summer becomes a thing of the past, and we embrace the chills of autumn, making sure the garage is efficient, secure, and safe should be on the honey-do list. For some garages it may be a simple repair or tweek, but rest assured when you replace your door with a quality, high end door, it will be worth it's weight in gold! "Compared with 22 other common home-improvement projects, an upscale garage door replacement offers one of the biggest bangs for your buck and costs much less than many other home improvement projects" according to the Remodeling Magazine's 2020 Cost vs. Value Report. Coming in at #2 with a 94.5% ROI at resale, the garage clearly deserves some attention!

Whether you are building (or rebuilding) your dream home, we want to help enhance your curb appeal, ensure sustainability and energy efficiency, and allow for a low-maintenance lifestyle. With a Fimbel door you can count on more!

The most obvious reason to replace your garage door is to improve the curb appeal of the home. The term applies to the aesthetic appeal of a residential or commercial building as perceived from the street, and it was made popular in the 90's with the release of HGTV's show "Curb Appeal". As you may know, the entry door of most homes only constitutes 8% of the home's frontage while the garage door often consumes 30%, we can see the potential for impact with a new door. With the impressive ROI, utilizing the capabilities we offer through our manufacturing as well as additional options such as finishing and hardware, updating the garage door is a slam dunk! To learn more about designing like an architect, please enjoy the attached blog post where we take you through the process!

Make it Your Own:

First choose your style. While there are many, many design options available in our lineup, there are three basic styles of garage doors in our industry: Traditional, Carriage, and Modern.

Traditional garage doors represent the designs of the second half of the 1900's using raised panel and recessed panel designs. Carriage style garage doors will have an overlay look representative of the doors used on barns for a timeless look. Finally, Modern style garage doors can run the gamut but often have clean lines, smooth surfaces, and interesting windows.

With Fimbel ADS we can accommodate any of the design styles you desire. Our doors have the sought after look of painted wood without the maintenance. Our Euro, Presidential, and Roaring Twenties series give you the liberty to design to your heart's delight. Our American Legends series comes not only in the classic carriage style but also recessed panel and modern while offering customizations!

Our finishing options give way for your design to take flight with a standard color, custom color, or hand applied faux stain of your choice. Using sustainable paint products and proprietary application processes, our finish will last and bring peace of mind. To find out more about our finishing options, here's another blog post to help paint the full picture for you!

Color isn't the only way to make a Fimbel door your own. We offer you the opportunity to design your door down to the smallest detail. Whether you want to customize the top section to allow for more or less light, or you want to redesign the top section completely to incorporate scrollwork or a custom design, we have the options for you.

Another way to make it your own is to add decorative hardware to the face of the door. To simplify the installation and application of the add-on features, we can customize our rails and designs to accommodate their size and even pre drill the holes to guarantee a polished final look. To complete the package for the hardware, you have the option to powder coat the track system in virtually any color though we like clean white and solid black!

Make it Smarter:

Our organization hangs our hat on safety and quality not only in how we make our product, and we want you to feel the benefits of that. Fimbel doors are manufactured to be safety first. You, your family, your home, and your belongings will rest safely behind our door. Our doors are engineered for durability! We know that poorly fitted doors are not only unsightly but also allow unwanted openings. Since we can match nearly any opening, weather, burglars, and bugs will not have access to your home through the garage door!

Fimbel doors offer you a low-maintenance lifestyle. The clean appearance of the door should last for years to come with a gentle clean with mild soap and water. No harsh abrasives or undue elbow grease necessary. This aspect may be overlooked, but when we consider the supply chain for cleaning products, the effort to implement the cleaning, and the residual waste moving into the earth, we see our processes make way for sustainability.

Another way that we encourage sustainability is in the benefits you will feel toward energy efficiency! To get a basic idea, the older the door the more likely it is that money is seeping out through it. Our doors are made with insulation that is laminated and completely fill the cavity inside the door to keep air from moving around and through the door. A well-insulated door will reduce energy costs as well as maintain temperatures set in the garage. We want to help you keep cool air in during the summer and cold air out during the winter!

One of the longest lasting aspects of our doors is the contribution made upon purchase. For every door we sell, we work with our partners at One Tree Planted to plant a tree on your behalf. We know the resources generously given my Mother Nature need replenishing, and we want to pay it forward!

iTo back this beautiful, energy efficient, and low-maintenance lifestyle, we offer you a robust warranty that will satisfy! Regardless of your geographical location, we offer a warranty for our products coast to coast and proudly stand behind our warranty.

Make it a Fimbel:

Don't compromise aesthetic appeal for practical needs - you can have it all with a Fimbel door. With our designs, you can find the right door to offer you more. If energy efficiency is what you are after, we have you covered. If your geographic location is limiting your choices, we have you covered. If you are driven by value and longevity, we have you covered. Or if you simply want to make your neighbors jealous, we've got that, too! We are here to provide the door to support your lifestyle and desires – no matter your opening or aspiration, we have you covered!

This Old House and Fimbel

Old-House-Blog---Feature-Image

As the fourth generation of a family of manufacturers, we know what it's like to strive to preserve the integrity and legacy of the past while catching up to the innovations of today's design and building materials. Fortunately, we have learned to balance the two in order to provide a quality product built on tried and true practices while pushing the limits to give you more in a garage door.

We were proud to partner with another organization that holds the value of blending old school with new. The 2019 Idea House in the coveted historic district of downtown New Canaan, CT featured the restoration of the facade of an 1880's Greek Revival. Karp Associates and CAH Architects married old with new to accommodate the legacy of the home and allow for modern aspirations.

The Style

The house was originally built in the late 1800's and until recently had been largely uninhabited with the exception of the rumored family of rats. Today it remains a built-from-the-ground-up glory that remains true to the original architectural style. Greek Revival architecture spans much of the 1800's designed to represent the triumph of our newly formed nation. The homes were painted in white to reflect the clean, solid marble of Greek design. They are typically rectangular in shape with a low pitch roof and large columns.

One defining aspect of Greek Revival is the windows and the front door which was often expansive to give dimension to the design. Typically they used double hung, 6-pane windows using a mid 19th-century glazing technique. The entry door is known for its dramatic side windows and transoms to enhance the interior light, overall sophistication to provide all who enter a warm welcome!

The Plan

The plan was to save the historic part of the façade, and build behind it a modern home with today's most innovative, quality building materials while preserving the window sashes and other aspects of the original build. Doing this requires the ability to adjust from the original material to a modern material offering sustainability and design capabilities. This is where we come in!

To complement the restored window sashes on the front of the home and many other features - both historic and contemporary - the Roaring Twenties Charleston design was chosen for the style, size, and complementing interior grille. Powder coated track was custom built to accommodate the angled roof and car lift. Every detail was considered in this project, and the garage doors were no exception.

The Doors

With the level of commitment made to the restoration front windows, selecting a garage door with complementary windows that are not only big and beautiful but built to last and allow the stark history to shine through. Using our one piece construction method to eliminate the gaps at joints and unsightly plastic inserts of other door models, our interior grille option enhances the character and depth of the top section! The complementary powder coated track truly shines as a nod to the modern twist of color used around the exterior and a break from the traditional white of Greek revival architecture.

The classic American carriage door comes to life with the Fimbel Roaring Twenties series. With its simulated battens, clean cut overlays, and the look of a swing door, it makes any project feel like home. The smart period detail combined with our advanced materials allow you to enjoy the look of wood with virtually no maintenance. Using patented construction and design flexibility, we offer nearly any combination of window and door styles. Roaring Twenties collection blends both tradition and innovation to welcome you home with a beautiful and durable door to stand the test of time.

The Result

When the project requires beauty and durability while offering more, the answer is a Fimbel door. This Old House Idea House 2019 is what new homebuyers want in a house today with its proximity to downtown New Canaan, the open and modern interior, and the finest 3-car garage in the area. With bonus rooms sprinkled throughout the house, it is clear they left no detail overlooked.

We are proud that our Roaring Twenties garage doors will welcome the new owners home and provide safety and durability for life. To learn more about how you can complement your home with a garage door uniquely crafted for you, please find a dealer and get curious about how you can find more in a garage door.

Design Like an Architect

Feature-Image---Architect-Blog
Whether you find inspiration in nature, the neighborhood, or the newest concept, our goal is to offer solutions to bring your vision to life while offering beauty and durability you can count on. From residential to commercial and historic to contemporary, we rely on nearly a century of experience to craft a product built to last a lifetime and bring elegance to every environment. Whether you are the architect, the builder, or the homeowner, we truly believe that we have something that will make your life, your project, and therefore your bottom line, positively and profoundly better.

We know that projects from the onset have to respect the hopes and visions set forth, the environment in which the structure will cohabitate, the requirements of local codes, and the sustainability of the process and the outcome. The result must be a functional, beautiful structure that also suits the site.

Here's where we come in! We offer you more!

More Creativity:

Using your unique design perspective, ambition, and talent, we offer you the opportunity to complete your vision with the quality and capabilities needed to truly round out your final project. Our doors allow you to capture architectural features used in original period designs or contemporary trends. For example, your windows can be nearly any configuration, any design, and nearly any location to tie features through the home to the garage door! You can accommodate any opening by customizing in 1" height and width increments or matching an uneven floor with a scribed bottom. The face of the door is fully customizable whether it's adding logos and routed designs from geometric shapes and windows to waves or anchors. you name
it!

But don't stop with the exterior, we offer interior elements to enhance every angle: interior grilles, ⅜" smooth backer, and powder-coated track sets among others! We can also factory finish the interior!

Not only can you count on our quality materials, but our nearly century long tenure in the industry gives us unmatched experience. Our team of Customer Service Representatives and Engineers will support the project with their 20+ years average experience to be sure you get what you need! Through the process you will receive a CAD drawing to hone in on the details of your design and ensure accuracy. You will see your vision come to life with the most comprehensive and sustainable doors in the market, and they will be uniquely yours.

More Beauty:

We know the garage door is no longer simply a function of access and storage, but it has become a showpiece to many projects. At Fimbel we offer you more beauty. There is much to know about our capabilities, but you can be assured that if you can dream it, we can build it! The products offered today originated on old-world craftsmanship and classic designs, but we have added innovative technology and materials (more on a few of them below) to offer unmatched beauty and durability. You can design to your heart's delight.

We offer a wide range of finishing options from our faux stain and factory finish to two tone doors and custom color matching. We have recently published several other blog posts detailing our finishing, so if you want to learn more, please check out the value in our finishing! But our options don't end there. With Fimbel you can make selections for your door on the glass options based on the style and purpose of your space. You can also incorporate design details into the interior of the door to complement the splendor of the exterior. Adding decorative hardware is another way to enhance the sophisticated beauty of Fimbel Doors and no matter the size, we can customize most aspects of the door to accommodate.

More Durability:

The first step in navigating our product offerings is to understand that we make our doors in two innovative ways to offer a vast variety of styles and solutions. When buying a Fimbel door, you can count on the look of real wood, durable construction methods, low-maintenance, precision fit, bold windows, reliable R-value, and more, more, more!

Our first construction platform offers carriage and traditional styles using a vinyl clad steel pan and applying vinyl overlays to create the look of a classic wood door. This door is exceptional for two main reasons – the first is the platform (pan) made of a smooth, steel base made for the elements that we coat (clad) in a thin layer of crisp, white vinyl. This innovation allows for the American Legends series to live nearly anywhere, even near the ocean, without rusting and rotting away in the elements. To this we add the smooth, solid white overlays made of sustainable material. Separating ourselves from the competition's fake wood grain completes the constructed look to appear as real, traditional wood. Both features ensure the longevity our ethics demand, the look we all crave, and a price point sure to please.

Our second construction platform truly shines in the blend between tradition and innovation. Using a hand placed wood frame and nesting in our insulation, we laminate a vinyl back cover and a solid vinyl exterior that encases the face. This slab now becomes a blank slate to bring you more for your door. Using both 3/8" and ¾" material, primarily Versatex, we have options to add select profiles and nearly limitless designs to satisfy inspiration. You will see these designs in our Euro-Dor and Presidential Collections offering both carriage, traditional, and modern styles.

To achieve a more classic carriage look, we offer the Roaring Twenties. This series starts with the same platform yet adds solid, sturdy overlays pocketed (nested) into the face. The pronounced look of this classic style can be modified in myriad ways to satisfy decorative features and historic applications. Each of these series offers incredible longevity and beauty we can all feel good about!

More for You:

When we build, we build for beauty and durability that will last because we care about your satisfaction as well as our environment. From our processes to our products, we reduce, reuse, and recycle everything we can. We run on solar, and we love to help reduce your overall maintenance efforts and costs.

At Fimbel Architectural Doors, we pride ourselves on providing beautiful, creative, durable products to satisfy your project needs. With 95 years of experience on our side, we can provide you and your customer with MORE!

When you approach your next residential or commercial project with a garage door opening, know that you can offer them MORE than they expect with a Fimbel Door, and you can feel good about your recommendation as we will plant one tree for each door we manufacture to honor our beautiful earth! Challenge what you think is true of garage doors! We dare you! Find a dealer or reach out to the factory for more specifications.

More on our Materials:

Our material selections are made with great care and scrutiny as we have learned how important it is to make the choice based on safety and quality. The three suppliers below have impressed us with their products, sustainability, and partnership. We are proud to showcase them for you!

Versatex is our material of choice for all of our white, unfinished doors. "VERSATEX is a free- foamed cellular PVC material that duplicates the beauty of wood, yet provides long lasting protection against rot, cracking, and decay—all without requiring any paints or sealants to protect it from the environment." We chose them as partners not only because of their unmatched quality but because of their values.

Tricoya is our preferred material for our factory finished doors! Using this product allows us to knock out the obstacles of exposure and impact from heat. "Tricoya is a high performance MDF panel characterized by its durable and dimensional stability properties yet requiring no supplemental protection or finishing even when exposed to moisture."

AquaSurTech is by far the best coating system for our product! When combined with our proprietary processes for application, our factory finish leaves you with a cabinet-finish unmatched on exterior applications. "D200 is a high-performance single application exterior water-based coating system designed for direct application to PVC."

Historic Engine 55 - FDNY

Feature-Image---Engine-55---FDNY---2

What do New York City's Little Italy, actor Steve Buschemi, and Fimbel Doors have in common? Very simply, the historic and honorable Engine 55. Nestled in the heart of Little Italy, this structure stands tall and proud telling the gravest and bravest stories of the City. This grand structure was home for several years to the notable actor, Steve Buschemi. His return to service after 9/11 and his advocacy for the FDNY has earned him the title of Honorary Battalion Chief of the FDNY. His dedication and commitment demonstrate the core values of the organization and those shared by us at Fimbel.

A walk through the streets of New York's five boroughs will undoubtedly bring you past one of the 197 Engine Houses associated with the FDNY. Most of the doors you will see have been manufactured by Fimbel either then or now. To bring history to life, we worked with our team at Thompson Overhead Door in Brooklyn, the FDNY, and the Landmark Society of New York as is required to preserve the history and integrity of the architecture. The brave men and women of the FDNY have shown up through the most challenging of circumstances to serve the community. At Fimbel Architectural Doors, we are proud to supply the sectional doors that give passage to their life saving efforts.

When buying a Fimbel door, you can count on the look of real wood, durable construction methods, low-maintenance, precision fit, bold designs, reliable R-value, and customizations to complement any style! One project that has become a showpiece of Fimbel's products is the door designed for the historic three-story firehouse of Engine 55. In researching the building for this blog, the site for the FDNY patches offered the
following information:

Built in 1889, this building was designed by R.H. Roberson to represent a transition from Romanesque Revival and the more ornate Beaux Arts style, both popular in the late 19th century. The iconic facade is a combination of limestone and terra cotta, decorated with ribbons, oak leaf wreaths, lions heads, and at least one phoenix. Engine 55 is known as "Cinquantacinque," Italian for "Fifty-Five," as it has been the firehouse in Lower Manhattan's Little Italy for over a century.

When we were called in for this design, we worked with Thompson Overhead Door and the Landmark Society to create the perfect architectural doors. Landmarks provided the vision, and we provided the solution. Our result is our customs Presidential Firehouse Series finding its home here in New York City and across the country. To best bring this dream to life, several factors needed to be considered.

There are few firehouses in the vast array of FDNY locations that have wrought iron, so we wanted to incorporate the design of the original transom into what was once a flat, simple door. We also had to accommodate the unique size of the opening. The Engines have evolved and grown over the years, and even though Engine 55's side view mirrors are tucked in tighter than on most fire apparatus, the opening is still tight. The firehouse's historic and narrow archway allows just an inch or two of clearance on either side of the truck as it exits and enters the building. The image below, found on Instagram, demonstrates the narrow passage.

Our Presidential Series offers the best solution for this design obstacle. Using innovative techniques and advanced composite material, we are able to construct a door that can fit any opening - even the 10'4" x 10'6" of Engine 55. Using a hand placed wood frame and nesting in our insulation, we laminate a vinyl back cover and a solid vinyl exterior that encases the face creating an impenetrable and long lasting platform. This slab now becomes a blank slate to bring you more for your door. Using ¾" material for the Presidential, we have options to add select profiles and nearly limitless designs
to satisfy inspiration.

We complete the look for this door with the highest quality paint in the market. Not only is the bold red color indicative of the FDNY but also of Fimbel. When my great-grandfather, Ed Fimbel Sr., began as the first franchise in the Overhead Door corporation, he wanted more for his family and more for our blossoming industry. Now, after 95 years, a quick tour of our history will reveal that we are big fans of red! Since 1924, this bold color has been our brand identity before brand identities were a thing. Today, we apply our "FDNY Red" to the vast number of doors for the elite Fire Department of New York.

Continuing this level of quality requires the best today as we uniquely offer a cabinet like finish unknown to architectural paint. Our factory finish, made with D200 High performance paint, is a single application exterior waterborne coating system designed to provide the type of protection deserving of the FDNY. Our family remains proud to give passage to so many firehouses in the FDNY family of firemen and women. We know that quality and dedication drive them to succeed, and we thank one and all deeply. To all the First Responders and Partners in making our world a safer, better place: We celebrate you and your families and will continue our mission of safety and quality so that you may continue yours.

Many thanks to the information found at the FDNY Shop to support this post!

One Door - One Tree

One-Tree-Planted-21

One family value that drives who we are is a shared respect for and devotion to the earth and its beings – human and animal. This core value is seen today in our commitment to reducing our footprint as we honor the past and move to the future. To sustain this balance, our focus is all about quality and safety. These two measures are applied to not only the products we manufacture, but the processes and people involved. Our priorities are clear: supporting the environment, our global and local community, our team members, and our partners. Each of these priorities drives us to succeed only to the betterment of all.

Going green is more than a slogan:

Through our partnership with One Tree Planted (501c3) we do our part to restore our generous forests and our planet. It is undeniable that mother nature's bounty has provided for the garage door industry and our family since we both began manufacturing overhead doors in the early 1920's. Today, every single door sold by Fimbel Architectural Doors plants a tree through the hard work and commitment of our tree-loving partners. Together, we hope to make the world more beautiful and sustainable one door and one tree at a time.

At the end of the day, we love going green! From our strategy for logistics to the fact that we run on SOLAR and pass along our unused power back to the grid. We conserve on single use plastics, convert practices to paperless, purchase compostable products when single use is necessary, and so much more.

We know we cannot change the world with only a door, but we can challenge how we operate to make the world a healthier place. We do this with a focus to improve efficiency to reduce supply chain demand, retain and empower our Team, and build stronger communities. Our quality allows us to get it right the first time because our goal is to pave the way for the next generation.

We can always do more:

Because we know that planting trees to rehabilitate our forests is only one way to help the earth heal, we also back our donations with our efforts. We built an energy smart manufacturing process to endure and to save. For example, because of our processes and commitment to sustainability, our product results in honest and verified R-Values ranging from 8.12-13.12. This allows a reduction in wasted energy especially when combined with an energy efficient garage. Our quality insulation serves to reduce negative energy consumption, and our windload package allows our doors to withstand extreme winds and provide a safer community by enhancing the stability of the garage.

Our products are all low-maintenance resulting in a rather stress free ongoing relationship. They are easy to clean with gentle soap and water or perhaps Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are needed for stubborn spots. All Fimbel doors are made to be naturally unfinished and virtually maintenance free which reduces processes and requirements for harsh chemicals and finishes. When you do choose to finish our products, our water based and eco-friendly paints bring beauty and peace of mind!

All of these decisions are made to support our internal efficiency drive which will reduce our contribution to the landfills and our precious waterways. Our goal is to conserve resources in how we function, how the supply chain is managed, and how the door will continue our efforts when it becomes yours.

In our day to day operations, we make both big and small decisions to continue the efforts of our partnership with One Tree planted. Most notably, we run on solar, and we pass along our extra collected energy. We initiated this many years ago when it became clear we had to do more than manage our robust recycling program, reduce our logistics, and purchase sustainable supplies and goods. With our solar program, we are reminded daily to make good decisions.

About One Tree Planted:

One Tree Planted is a nonprofit on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Their projects span the globe and are done in partnership with local communities and knowledgeable experts to create an impact for nature, people, and wildlife. Reforestation helps to rebuild forests after fires and floods, provide jobs for social impact, and restore biodiversity. Many projects have overlapping objectives, creating a combination of benefits that contribute to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

"The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is now." – Darrell Putman.

We cannot look at this and say we are late to the game: We must look at this and say what else can we do? We partnered with One Tree Planted to do our part to restore our generous forests and our planet. Together, we hope to make the world more beautiful and long lasting one door and one tree at a time.
