Finishing Guidelines and Information

• Doors made with Vinyl Composite Technology can be left natural white, and installed as-is.
• They can be finished at our factory with our heat reflective, moleculary-bonded protective coating, available in a rainbow of colors, including black. Please consult the factory to explore your options.¹
• They can also be factory stained in one of eight woodgrain colors with our High-Performance heat reflective finish, especially formulated to protect your vinyl door.¹³
• If you elect to paint your door, it must be done in strict accordance with our finishing instructions for vinyl doors.²
• Under no circumstances can our vinyl door products be field stained.³

¹ Factory applied coatings on VCT products carry a 15 year warranty, available on our Downloads page.

² There are many paint manufacturers that claim their paint is suitable for use with vinyl. Many paints we have tested will indeed coat your vinyl carriage house door, but are not heat-reflective. The sun's heat is absorbed and magnified by standard color pigmentation, is intense enough to distort the face of your door. This is not exclusive to vinyl carriage house doors, but vinyl siding and windows as well. Use of these paints will void your warranty.

As of this writing, The only paint we recommend, and the only paint that will be honored by your warranty when applied outside the factory, is Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint^TM, mixed with their VinylSafe^TM color formulation. This is the only commercially available paint we have tested that not only adheres sufficiently to vinyl, but protects it.  You must follow our finishing guide, available in our Downloads area, under "Finishing Documentation", when finishing your door outside the factory.

VinylSafe^TM paint is available in their Duration^TM, Resillience^TM, and SuperPaint^TM varieties, but out of those three, SuperPaint^TM is the only acceptable choice. Duration^TM and Resillience^TM have been known to cause mechanical problems in the past, as often they do not fully cure, and are therefore not acceptable for use on our Vinyl doors.

Please note: SuperPaint^TM is available with or without VinylSafe^TM color pigmentation, and you must specify VinylSafe^TM when you purchase your paint.

³ If you wish to have the look of stained wood, your door must be finished by us at the factory. There are no commercially available stains suitable for vinyl as of this writing, and application of stain outside the factory will void your warranty. American Legends is not available with a stained finish.
